︎ CLASSROOM WEIMAR

Crying Classroom, October and November 2023, Weimar, Germany

The classroom in Weimar was held at Der Laden art space during October and November 2023 as a dynamic two-month program facilitated by the Crying Classroom team. With nine weekly events and twelve sessions, it offered a diverse range of activities such as performances, readings, exercises, movements, discussions, and tea sessions, moderated by artists selected through a previously launched open call.
The interdisciplinary and participatory program provided an international platform for exploring the personal, social, and political aspects of crying, seeing the term as a discipline, practice, metaphor, tool or a medium in artistic research.
Rejecting traditional hierarchies, the program empowered all participants to share their knowledge and experiences, contributing to innovative artistic strategies and fostering a sense of solidarity and trust, considering each moderator a crying expert.

The Crying Classroom had the pleasure of collaborating with artist Melina Vesely on her project "Thoughts on Crying" at the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien in Vienna during the winter semester Rundgang.
Structured as two workshops and a series of exercises, the classroom featured two sessions: "Get External" moderated by Nadja Kracunovic and "Urgency to Appropriate: Everybody's most unwanted Monologue" moderated by Rand Ibrahim. Following an introductory round, both sessions delved into themes of social responsibility and emotional capacity, exploring concepts such as emotional generosity, empathy, sympathy, and sensational distance.
Through meaningful exchanges, participants demonstrated a collective commitment to addressing the broader implications of emotions. Their engagement and shared perspectives enriched our exploration of crying and societal dynamics, adding a crucial dimension of solidarity to the experience.

In a world where emotional responses are often privatized and suppressed, the Crying Classroom seeks innovative approaches to explore the emotional needs and cognitive processes of individuals and groups. As part of our ongoing mission to challenge conventional academic structures and foster critical dialogue, we exchanged with the students of the Iceland University of the Arts through an online workshop.
We investigated the connection between collective capacity and social responsibility focusing on understanding the complex nature of emotional responses that arise in challenging conditions, how they affect us, and our reaction to them. The workshop adopted several techniques and methods of communication and research, inviting all participants to reflect and engage in our process of recognition and positioning.
